Beauty at the beach is more than skin deep. It's about protecting the environment and providing user education.
The Blue Flag program works towards sustainable development at beaches and marinas. It outlines strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education, environmental management, safety and other services.
Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded to over 3,300 beaches and marinas in 39 countries in Europe, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Canada and the Caribbean.
The Caribbean Blue Flag program introduced to the Caribbean in 1999, was implemented by a Caribbean Blue Flag Consortium comprising the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST), the Caribbean Conservation Association (CCA), and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO).
The program is owned and operated globally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
Today, there are seven Blue Flag beaches in the Dominican Republic and five in Puerto Rico and Jamaica, and one Blue Flag marina in the Bahamas.
